This is without a doubt the most amazing astronomy image I've seen this year: a planet-forming disc around the young star HL Tauri. This image was made with the ALMA sub-millimeter radio telescope, by combining the signals from many antennas, which makes it even more impressive.
When we first saw this image we were astounded at the spectacular level of detail. HL Tauri is no more than a million years old, yet already its disc appears to be full of forming planets. This one image alone will revolutionise theories of planet formation
