Today, John Kovac and Clem Pryke announced tremendously exciting results on behalf of the BICEP2 collaboration. The BICEP2 experiment, run from the South Pole, was searching for the imprint of gravitational waves in the early universe upon the cosmic microwave background (CMB). And they've found it.
This is truly spectacular. Congratulations to the BICEP2 team!
Gravitational waves from inflation generate a faint but distinctive twisting pattern in the polarization of the CMB, known as a "curl" or B-mode pattern.
